YellaWood® brand Premium 5/4 deck boards offer a better appearance with minimal wane and smaller, less frequent knots than 5/4 Standard grade lumber. A bit thinner than our 2×6 decking, 5/4 Premium grade lumber is finished to be smoother and more modern than our rustic options (Signature and Prime), and the radius milled edges provide a more comfortable surface to walk on. Because it is thinner, it is best installed on joists that are closer together (12″ recommended with a max of 16″) to reduce bounce and bowing.

YellaWood® brand Premium wood decking may be available kiln-dried after treatment (KDAT) or with RainWood® brand water repellent treatment applied, depending on your region. Ask your local YellaWood® dealer for details.

YellaWood® brand Premium 5/4 deck boards are specifically milled for decking, and have fewer surface defects than Standard 5/4 boards, offering a better balance of appearance and value for most residential decks.

Available as Kiln Dried After Treatment (KDAT) lumber or with RainWood® brand treatment, YellaWood® brand Premium wood decking boards are a “better” grade, ideal when a more polished look matters. When applied, either option can get you using your new deck, faster.

YellaWood® brand Premium grade 5/4 deck boards sit above standard decking and below the most select lumber options. Choose YellaWood® brand Premium grade when you want a polished yet rustic feel for your outdoor design.

Premium

Premium grade lumber is focused on appearance without sacrificing strength. It has very few, tiny, well-spaced knots and a more uniform grain compared to 5/4 Standard, for a refined surface with fewer imperfections. It often offers more consistent color from board to board. Some slight bark edges may remain.

Available with radius milled edges, 5/4 Premium grade boards are thinner than 2×6 and have a smoother surface well-suited to stain or clear finishes. Because they are thinner, they must be installed closer together than other deck boards, on joists no farther than 16″ apart (12″ is better) to prevent bowing or bouncing.

YellaWood® brand Premium 5/4 wood decking boards are offered with radius milled edges, which work well with typical 16″ joist spacing, though 12″ is preferred, and common deck layouts to keep planning and installation straightforward.

Radius Milled Edges:

Offering a slightly rounded or eased edge, these boards are smoother and designed to distribute stress more evenly. Radius milled edges provide a more comfortable surface and promote drainage between boards. They are the ideal profile for the 5/4 Premium deck board.

YellaWood® brand Premium 5/4 deck boards are MCA treated lumber for decks. These boards can also be kiln dried after treatment (KDAT) or have Rainwood® brand water repellent added after treatment, depending on your region. Rainwood® brand cannot be applied when lumber is kiln dried after treatment (KDAT).

RainWood^® Brand

A factory-applied wax additive, RainWood® brand treatment is applied after the micronized copper azole preservative and assures water resistance on all four sides of the board, providing protection to the sides typically missed by a brush or spray-on repellents applied after installation. It minimizes cracking, warping and twisting due to swelling and shrinking from weather cycles, and it also means you don’t have to worry about applying a stain or seal to your project after installation. Availability may vary by dealer.

Kiln-Dried After Treatment (KDAT)

Alternatively, YellaWood® brand Premium may be available kiln dried after treatment (KDAT). KDAT pressure treated lumber is placed in a kiln to reduce excess moisture and bring the boards closer to their intended, stable dimensions vs air drying. It helps reduce shrinking, cupping or warping for more stable gaps and straighter lines. It also makes boards lighter and easier to handle on site. Rainwood® treatment cannot be applied to KDAT decking.

To retain the benefits of KDAT lumber, we recommend you stain or seal it upon installation (no waiting period necessary). Once exposed to moisture, the decking will need to fully dry again (sprinkle test) before product can be applied. Availability may vary by dealer.

YellaWood® brand Premium 5/4 deck boards are not available in structural lumber sizes.

They are designed to be part of a code-compliant deck system that includes properly sized and spaced framing members. When installed over joists that meet current code requirements, they provide a strong, reliable walking surface for everyday residential use.
